Suggested Text: TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 – The Protocols by W. Richard Stevens, Addison-Wesley, 1994.
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to give students the opportunity to explore the principles of computer networking through practical laboratory experiments and project activities. Upon completion, the student should be familiar with the principles, standards, components, and present practices in computer networks. The student will have explored a multi-layer protocol model, the TCP/IP protocol suite, various types of packets, packet analysis, network traffic, and network troubleshooting techniques. The student will also be familiar with how local area networks (LANs) are implemented on PCs, subnetting, and traffic routing.
Grading: (Out of 85 total points)
- 50% Labs – will be graded by giving quizzes on the lab material. All quizzes will be comprehensive. ESTIMATED quiz dates are given.
- Lab 1 – Intro to the Lab (Quiz – Sept 2)
- Lab 2 – TCP and UDP (Quiz – Sept 14)
- Lab 3 – Routing (Quiz – Sept 28)
- Lab 4 – Network Address Translation (NAT) (Quiz – Oct 12)
